Every person experiences back pain at some point. This is attributed to the bipedal posture humans acquired during the course of evolution. The majority of back pain is owed to mechanical reasons which subside on their own. In the present era, poor posture and a sedentary lifestyle contribute to these aches. It is essential to rule out other severe conditions if the pain persists for more than a week. Abdomen-related problems, urinary tract problems, kidney diseases, cardiac problems, lung-related issues, and most notably in the female population: uterine disorders, and ovarian cysts can all be present with back pain. The one distinguishing factor in all these conditions is that other system-related disorders will be present. Fever can also cause back pain.
A careful examination of the person concerned is always necessary to rule out these disorders. A visit to the hospital is suggested if:
Severe pain may call for further investigation. We divide these investigations into two sets. The first set consists of basic investigations like blood tests and x-rays. These are simple and inexpensive. They help rule out tumors, infections and arthritis-like problems. Positive results may require further investigations like MRI, CT scan, bone scan, etc., depending on the suspected disease. These investigations are specific and rely on the condition to be treated for the specific patient.
The above blood reports will be normal for non-specific back pains, fibromyalgias, posture-related problems, etc. We conduct SPINE REHABILITATION PROGRAMS for these patients and those in the software profession and other jobs that demand prolonged sitting. These are sessions in which patients will be assessed, and exercise programs tailored based on needs and demands. The sessions last over a month; patients can attend once a week, and spine physiotherapists will teach graded exercises.
Back Ache School is another initiative by our hospital where patients with similar job profiles and demands are clubbed together and exercise programs taught to them as a group.
