MPFL Reconstruction:

Medial patella-femoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is a procedure used to correct serious and recurring dislocation of the kneecap. MPFL is the major ligament that stabilizes the patella and helps prevent patellar subluxation (partial dislocation) or dislocation. A direct blow to the knee can cause dislocation, twisting injury to the lower leg, muscular contraction, or congenital abnormalities such as shallow or malformed joint surfaces.

Treatment

The surgery includes using a ligament taken from elsewhere in the body or a synthetic replacement. The surgeon reconstructs the MPFL to keep the kneecap in the trochlear groove, preventing dislocation. After surgery, patients will complete physical therapy for 3 to 6 months to ensure strong and stable muscles. Patients can expect to return to unrestricted activities by six months to 1 year after surgery.
