Vertebroplasty is an injection technique ā to provide pain relief in pathological fractures when they do not respond to bed rest and medications. Here bone cement ā Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is injected into the bone to make it mechanically more robust. This helps to relieve pain arising from that bone. The most common indications are osteoporotic fractures and tumors.
Here a balloon is inserted into the fractured bone, and the height of the bone is restored. This restoration of height is not possible in Vertebroplasty. This helps to regain the sagittal balance so that the upper back’s kyphotic (forward bending) deformity can be prevented.
